What Is a Donor-Advised Fund?
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account that allows you to make an irrevocable, tax-deductible contribution of cash, securities or other eligible assets to a sponsoring organization or community foundation. Those funds can be invested for potential growth, and you can recommend grants to eligible nonprofits when you’re ready to give.
DAFs can offer individuals, families, trusts, corporations and estates a flexible way to organize and manage their charitable giving while supporting the organizations and causes they care about, such as IRS-qualified 501(c)(3) public charities and nonprofits like Emmaus. DAFs generally cannot be used to support political campaigns or provide a donor with a personal benefit.

On Thursday, October 8, donors across the country will come together for DAF Day, a national day of giving that highlights the impact of donor-advised funds.
If you already have a DAF through a community foundation or provider such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable or Vanguard Charitable, consider recommending a grant to Emmaus this DAF Day.

The process is simple and can generally be completed through your DAF sponsor’s online portal:
- Log in to your DAF account and select an option such as “Recommend a Grant” or “Give to a Charity.”
- Search for Emmaus using our legal name or EIN to ensure you select the correct organization.
- Choose your grant amount and, if applicable, indicate whether you would like your gift to be unrestricted or designated for a specific purpose.
- Select your recognition preference and review your recommendation before submitting it.
Your DAF sponsor will review and approve the grant before sending it directly to Emmaus. Processing times vary by provider. Your grant can help provide:
- Emergency shelter for individuals and families experiencing homelessness
- Permanent and supportive housing
- Homelessness prevention services
- Supportive programs that help people build stability and move forward
