Emmaus Fast Facts & FAQs

Emmaus helps the women, men, and children that are the neediest among us. Many of our clients deal with mental illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence. Our clients range across all races, ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds. At Emmaus, everyone matters.

Emmaus owns and operates two emergency shelters and 99 affordable housing units. In addition to housing, Emmaus offers comprehensive support services including housing search assistance, an onsite licensed social worker, financial literacy training, as well as meals and household supplies. We take a holistic approach to homelessness to dismantle all barriers to housing for our clients.

Emmaus staff helps these families access permanent affordable housing, jobs, childcare, and other community resources.

Many guests at Mitch’s Place stay in the shelter for less than 3 months. Close to 90% of guests have at least one disability. The majority of guests struggle with substance abuse and/or mental illness. Emmaus staff seeks to connect eligible guests to available housing resources, support services, and job training programs operated by Emmaus and other community organizations. Emmaus works closely with Eliot Community Human Services to connect chronically homeless guests to mainstream resources and with Greater Lawrence family Health Center (GLFHC) to connect guests to medical services through their Health Care for the Homeless program.

Emmaus has held its signature event, Cycle for Shelter, for the past 35 years. Riders raise money and enjoy scenic tours of the Merrimack Valley and the New England Coast. Emmaus also holds a spring gala each year that includes an online auction. The Tree of Love annual giving campaign kicks off on #GivingTuesday and goes throughout the holiday season.

Emmaus relies heavily upon volunteers to fulfill its mission. Certified as a Service Enterprise by the Points of Light Foundation and the Massachusetts Service Alliance, more than 500 volunteers serve at Emmaus annually.
